About Creative Industries – Publicity

Publishing is another active branch of the Creative Industries group that we address in these articles, especially now in the context of digitisation, on an upward slope.

Traditionally, publishing is the area through which literature, music and any active content reaches the public for sale or free of charge, and the term refers primarily to the distribution of print (newspapers, magazines, etc.). However, in the digital context, this area has also ‘undergone’ a transformation with the advent of e-books and, in particular, all online publications (from magazines, newspapers, blogs, websites).

The commercial publishing industry includes both a number of titans such as Reuters and other multinational conglomerates, but also hundreds and dozens of independents. There are also, in the case of Romania, a number of impact publications, which have become increasingly visible in recent years for their content, and diversified product – Scena Nouă, Casa Jurnalistului, Decât o Revistă, Recorder, Igloo, Observator Cultural, Sub25 and so on, publications that are often self-supporting. In the case of large publications, there are a number of publishers that have cornered the Romanian market, such as Humanitas, which still operates through traditional sales processes.

However, the online market is the one that offers the most at the moment, especially in the way it manages to reach the final consumer for free. Platforms such as Scribd have always been an optimal alternative for consumers, being easily accessible and often fully free, offering direct access to subscribers.

Publishing in the online age is a niche that is no longer niched precisely because of the variety it offers. At the moment, blogging still holds an important position among the readers, and is also the ‘go-to’ for online social media platforms. So although online publishing sometimes departs radically from traditional publishing (perceived as being much lighter), it brings considerable benefits in terms of information, easily accessible, always offering an alternative to other publications, increasing the consumer’s ability to compare and choose the place and the optimal mode of expression for them.
